While watching TV I was zapping through the channels during the commercial break and stayed on MTV for some minutes. Something about the "rich and famous". They were showing Serena Williams (tennis player) who was showing off her clothes (a whole apartment full of it or so the size of her wardrobe) ....
So Serena is taking out a white mink telling us: " This is the first mink I bought. In live in Florida. I don't know when I am ever going to wear it. That's why I bought a white one. It looks smart."
Oh dear! Lady, maybe your white mink "looks smart", but you are definitely NOT. Bad enough you buy it, worse to say you don't even know when you should wear it. But the worst: claiming it looks smart. I suggest you had better invested some of that money, you used to buy a coat made of animals that were specifically raised to be killed for this purpose, to buy yourself a "smart" image consultant. That might have made YOU look smart instead of the poor dead animals fabricated into a coat you can't even wear. What a waste.
She can't be that stupid, she knew it was completely useless to have a mink in Florida. But when did it become fashionable to brag about fur coats again? When did it become stylish to confess you are proud to be responsible for the killing of small animals? And I am not saying this because I don't have that much money or can't afford a white mink coat. Truth is: I can't. But truth also is: if I did, I wouldn't. I am not saying I would donate all my money to charity and be a "better person". I would most likely buy a lot of useless stuff for myself and my family and friends. But also true is that I would definitely donate a lot to charity and organizations involved in saving animals, protecting nature, helping people and so forth. Also true is that even though I don't have much money, actually right now I am mostly broke due to not being able to work and having to live off my savings, I still find ways to donate money to causes I find worthy, or buy a friend a gift. But why on earth somebody with a sane mind would buy a mink coat just because you have the money and you can afford it and it's "trés chic" to own one, even though you can probably never wear it, beats me.
It's a completely different story if you lived in a "The Day after Tomorrow" scenario and you depended on warm clothing to survive, although modern fabrics have proven to be much more effective in that department than fur. There is nothing to be proud of. There is a lot to be ashamed of.
Note: Mink coats - not even white ones - are not smart. And they don't make you look smarter either.
Mental note to myself: next time stick to the commercials, it's healthier to watch somebody talk about a non-fat yoghurt or a detergent that cleans it all than to flip through the channels and risk a heart attack if somebody is talking about "smart" white mink coats.
